It’s not a particularly pretty thing to talk about; flake speckled shoulders, an itchy scalp and product buildup. But hey, life—and dandruff—happens. What you need to use without doubt is one of the best dandruff shampoos to wash those flakes away. But why do you get those pesky flakes in the first place?
Often mistaken for a dry scalp and treated with dollops of hair oil that only leads to severe buildup, dandruff is actually a very different condition. Though dandruff is commonly mistaken for a dry scalp, the two conditions are actually quite different. According to Dermatologist, Dr Apratim Goel, “Dandruff is caused by an increased oil production and yeast overgrowth on the scalp.” What this means is that if you have an oily scalp the chances of you developing dandruff are far more likely. Dr. Goel explains that the yeast called Malassezia, is commonly found in skin and could contribute to the inflammatory response in seborrhea or seborrheic dermatitis (the scientific name for dandruff). This yeast feeds on sebum or the oil that skin releases, so it thrives in oily areas.
Typically, dandruff is limited to the scalp that looks like loose, white scales or plaques. If you’re particularly unlucky, it can develop into seborrheic dermatitis. “This form of dandruff can affect other areas of the body like face, chest, and back and looks like yellow, greasy scales that are red and itchy.” Dr Goel says that this form of fungal acne is triggered by overuse of hair styling products, stress, infrequent (or too much) shampooing, sweat and living in moist, humid climates. But before you despair, know that help is at hand.
If you’ve been wondering to yourself, “How to get rid of a flaky scalp?” then we have some answers for you. While seborrheic dermatitis can never be completely cured, it can be managed effectively with over-the-counter anti-dandruff shampoos. The key is to look for anti-dandruff ingredients that are proven anti-fungals and antimicrobials such as Selenium Sulfide, Pyrithione Zinc, Ketoconazole, Coal Tar, and Tea Tree oil. These powerful ingredients slow down fungal growth and calm irritated, inflamed and itchy scalps. Dr Goel says that Pyrithione Zinc-infused formulations are ideal for first time anti-dandruff formula users because they are gentle yet effective, especially if you have sensitive skin. Other dermatologists recommend salicylic acid infused anti-dandruff formulas because this is a powerful exfoliating ingredient that removes flakes effectively and reduces scaling and dead skin buildup when used along with other dandruff treatments.
Here’s a list of the best anti-dandruff shampoo superstars that restore scalp health and gloss to your strands.
