<ol>
<b><li>Azelaic acid:</b> This is plant-based skin brightener that is used from 1 to 10% concentration on pigmented areas in case of patchy skin or in case of diffused pigmentation all over. </li>
<b><li>Kojic acid:</b> Derived from mushrooms or fermented rice, this molecule inhibits melanin formation. It’s also safe to use in combination with Vitamin C , Hyaluronic acid etc.</li>
<li><b>Niacinamide or Vit B3:</b> This a new molecule in skincare which has become a favourite very soon. Apart from being safe for all skin types including acne-prone skin, it also has moisturising and UV protection qualities. Moreover, its effect is enhanced when used with molecules such as Hyaluronic acid, which makes it uber versatile and an absolute dermat favourite. You can use any concentration between 5 to 20% concentration topically. </li>
<li><b>Tranexamic acid:</b> The role of topical as well as oral tranexamic acid in melasma pigmentation has already been established. </li>
<li><b>Bakuchiol:</b> This one is similar to retinoids, without the side effects. It’s also a newer molecule but very much accepted in topical creams for skin brightening. </li>

<b><li>Hydroquinone:</b> A gold standard once upon a time in management of hyperpigmentation and melasma, this molecule is being discarded now owing to its free availability and abuse. Also unsupervised use of this molecule can cause white patches (confetti like) on skin which can be permanent. Ochronosis is another dreaded side effect where dark bluish patches appear on skin.</li>
<b><li>Retinols in higher concentration:</b> Retinols have been used since ages in skin brightening but has to be used with caution and in graded concentration. Also due to its exfoliating and photosensitive properties, it can cause skin sensitivity and photoburns as well. </li>
<b><li>Heavy metals:</b> Ingredients such as Lead, Mercury, Chromium are used in very low permissible concentration in some cosmetics, but they are found in excess toxic amounts in some skin brightening creams and are extremely dangerous to the skin.</li>
<b><li>Steroids:</b> Steroids are usually added in skin brightening creams such as Clobetasone, Dexamethasone, Hydrocortisone etc. These molecules when used under supervision of a dermatologist are safe and must be used for a limited time and only to overcome a skin condition. When used unchecked and mixed in skin brightening creams, it can be very dangerous.</li>
